Keeping a check on mental health & illness for older adults

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WKBW) – Our mental health plays an important role in our whole life and for older adults it is important for them to recognize mental illness with aging.

The World Health Organization estimates that up to 15 percent of adults 60 years of age and older suffer from bipolar disorder.
As part of the Buffalo Strong: Health and Wellness Series, we discover how some adults keep their mental health up to standard.

Experts say that there are four areas in which seniors can work on their mental health:

Depression
Anxiety
Bipolar disorder
Eating disorders
That is why the institution of higher learning provides important communication for adults.

“Society often expects depression as it gets older, so we see a lot of depression and anxiety – in older people,” explains Jaymee Caplan, human resource development coach, Spectrum Health & Human Services.

Caplan says it can be difficult to distinguish between dementia and mental illness.

“For example – chronic forgetfulness – forgetfulness is actually a symptom of anxiety and the first stages of dementia in some form of Alzheimer’s,” explains Caplan.
